Rex was rescued from Miami-Dade Animal Services back in August of 2021. When Rex arrived there as a stray, he had an injury to his leg and was bleeding from an eye. It was suspected Rex had been hit by a car. SHARE of course stepped up for this poor guy.
Turns out Rex’s leg was indeed severely broken and he had surgery right way. Then he went to the ophthalmologist. Rex actually had a congenital birth defect and has always been blind in that eye. The eye had to be removed and he recovered nicely from that. He had an orbital implant placed underneath. This just keeps the shape of the eye (it’s not a glass eye) and sometimes when you look at him it looks like his eye was never removed. Then Rex’s original leg surgery failed and he needed a 2nd surgery to repair the break. The orthopedic surgeon also saw his knee was damaged as well so Rex had to also have TPLO surgery. Then if things haven’t been bad enough for him, he end up with MRSA. Unfortunately even with the strong antibiotic the infection wouldn’t clear up and he had to go in for a 3rd surgery to have his hardware removed. The goal at this point is that his leg could somewhat repair on its own and it wouldn’t have to be removed.
With a lot of hard work and therapy Rex’s leg has really improved. He went through 5 rounds of ProloTherapy injections which seemed to help him. Rex is will always have a little bit of a limp and his leg gets a little sore from time to time but he sure doesn’t let that affect his quality of life or his personality! Even his vet is amazed with how he gets around with all that he had going on.
Rex just loves to be with his people, He isn’t on top of you but likes to be near you. Rex isn’t going to be a running or a jogging partner. He is not a dog you would take to dog parks. However, he does need to remain active with daily walks and a pool would be a huge plus as he could continue his swimming therapy! He would do best in a home with a fenced yard but (just like any dog) he shouldn’t be left alone in the yard. He does love a good game of fetch in the yard.
Rex may be good with a dog his size that not high octane. A meet and greet would be required. No small dogs, highly active dogs or cats. He will only be adopted locally (preferably Palm Beach County). No exceptions!! A home check is required! Looking for that special home that will continue helping him. If you think that may be you, please complete an application.
